Batam Island
Batam Island, located
just 20 kilometers southeast of
Singapore, with area around
two-third the size of Singapore
is one of the largest islands in
Indonesia's Riau Archipelago.
With nearby Bintan and
Karimun Island and a part of
eastern Sumatra Island, they
form the Riau Province. Batam,
Rempang, Galang and a few
smaller surrounding islands form
the Barelang Municipality of 715
square kilometers. Its strategic
location at the crossroad of
international shipping routes
and its close proximity to
Singapore's trading, banking,
transport and business service
facilities cause that the island
is more and more important.
Until 1971 the island was not
developed, today Batam's modern
infrastructure is supported by
investor developments of
industry, business and tourism.
As a new destination, Batam is
fast becoming popular with
tourist from overseas countries.
